It is seasonal music, coloured by the echoes of cold winters and the heat of choking summers. There is choral music, industrial music bound together by John Barry strings, tough percussion and Gareth Smith’s deep, distinct vocal and esoteric lyrics that explore loss, anger and political and religious ideologies. It dispenses with drums altogether for five of the tracks. It makes flutes and cello sound angry. Recorded live with a minimum of overdubs Luna Marseille crackles with energy and tension.

Luna Marseille also features the single Inside Many Summers, which has enjoyed regular airplay on John Kennedy's XFM show and Marc Riley's BBC6 music show.

Gareth Smith's ensemble has always been striving for an individual sound, escaping rigid templates and embracing wider horizons. Stranger Son are too catchy for the rock scenes, too structured for the experimental scenes, too weird to be outright pop. Smith says: ‘The only band I’ve ever wanted to emulate is the Velvet Underground. It was hard and noisy, catchy and pretty.’ In Luna Marseille Stranger Son have made their boldest step toward creating their individual sound.

Luna Marseille is due for release November 28th.

New Limited Stranger Son 12" EP

We're extremely proud to welcome the return of Manchester's Stranger Son to White Box, following 2009's astonishing "Engine" 12" (Our first release!) and the "Einstein's Getaway" mini-album. Stranger Son have proven to be one of the most consistently brilliant groups to come out of Manchester in the past few years, going from strength to strength whilst cycling through seemingly endless band line-up shifts, led thoughout by the militant pop brilliance of mainman Gareth Smith.

Their new 12" 'Inside Many Summers', is an EP of hazardously infectious disco-not-disco grooves and loose-ass, Pennines-jams. The title track is taken from their forthcoming album 'Luna Marseille', whereas the other two tracks ('On Pterodactyl Sofa' and the monolithic twelve and a half minute instrumental sprawl that is 'Iceman Part II Extended'), are exclusive to the EP.

'Inside Many Summers' EP is limited to 250 physical copies only (the EP will also be available digitally), and is released on September 12th to coincide with...its own release date.

Check out the EP Soundcloud Sampler below!

Ever since the pre-mastered audio landed, White Box HQ have been running this DYNAMITE record 24/7. We are extremely proud to announce that our next release is the second full length solo album from Richard A Ingram.

Entitled 'Happy Hour', the album comprises four long-form compositions of Ingram's masterful, uber-bleak drone and dismantled sonic approaches. 'Happy Hour' follows last year's incredible debut album 'Consolamentum' (if you don't own a copy, email via the contact page to order while stocks last!). This time round we find Richard plunge further into murky depths of emptiness and isolation sound.

The album has been meticulously mastered by 12k label head and all round audio aficionado Taylor Deupree.

'Happy Hour' will be released early May 2011 on CD, housed in a digipack (front cover art above). This will be a limited run release, and is available to pre-order now by emailing info(at)whiteboxrecordings(dot)co(dot)uk

Some sneaky audio preview samples will be going up soon...watch this space.

Jasper TX / Danny Saul / Relmic Statute Leeds Gig this Saturday March 12th

<img style="float: left; Here's what the good folks at Norman Records had to say about the Warm Widow album:

'Feckin' hell this album is great. A raw energetic tuneful blast of melodic noise from the mean streets of Manchester. The story goes that these were the demo's for a future album project but when the label heard them they decided to put them out as is. How right they were as the unsweetened approach serves the music perfectly. Its brutal lo-fi rock sitting somewhere between The Fall, Jesus Lizard and Guided By Voices. The guitars are constantly on the edge of mayhem only held together by the energetic drumming and thumping bass, but through the sludge emerge the most remarkable blasts of melody which keep your ears finely tuned throughout, it never becomes too tuneful, nor too difficult and it brings to mind the bleak inner city in which it was recorded, short blasts of sun peeking through the gap in the curtains of a darkened room. Other names that spring to mind are angry Salford noiseniks Dub Sex, the angular guitar stabs of Gang of Four, the production values recall the recent Women album. In fact this is like a bleak Northern English retort to the slightly more other worldly Women, both bands learning the lesson as provided by The Fall as you can screech and howl and make great swathes of noise but you must also have tunes and bugger me, this one does. It often recalls early Guided Voices and the vocals are very R. Pollard at times, this of course is a great thing. Highly recommended.'

Check out the album opener 'Cracker' below.

WHITEBOX007 - Warm Widow 'Cracker' by whitebox

Richard A. Ingram on Pitchfork

Another great review for Consolamentum, this time at Pitchfork:

"From its very first sound, Richard A. Ingram's Consolamentum sounds like a nightmare. Hopefully you appreciate these grim environs, because Consolamentum seldom leaves them. Electro-acoustic terror is not what you'd expect from the solo debut of the guitarist for Oceansize, a band who formed in the 1990s and pretty much stayed there. But Ingram cracks his skull open and finds a lot more than post-rock noodles and grunge riffs crawling around inside.

"The sound will be familiar to anyone who's swept out the darker corners of metal-influenced drone: broken-backed dirges for guitar, piano, and mutilated tape that skulk between ambient, noise, and pure sound art. The melodic elements are strong but always imperiled in corrosive atmospheres. The emphasis is on texture and weight, with big sounds that are full of air and small ones that sink like lead, woven into coarse yet involved patterns. One of the best tracks, "De Montfort", works drones and Satie-inspired piano into an uneven pile of looped scratches and clatters. There is a uniform sense of coiled menace, but the compositions are diverse.

"You don't need the titular reference to an archaic religious sect to clue you in that this is an esoteric album. In fact, the title adds an unnecessary extra layer of opacity that threatens to obscure what you really listen for in music like this: the spark of a unique personality. Luckily, Ingram has that. Like his many of his peers, the emotional center of his music is arrested dread. But he breaks the mold by allowing for small, vital moments of catharsis-- unbroken chains of guitar notes welling up from the benighted margins. This is a productive change of pace for a style that often stops at "something terrible is coming." So, down to other business…

First up we are proud to announce the release of 'Trails/Traces' by Arkhonia (WHITEBOX006), due 6th September 2010 on CD. Arkhonia is one half of a collaborative project under the name of jz-arkh (or www.jz-arkh.co.uk, if you want to try and access its long-expired website) releasing two 7"s back in 2001 to some small critical acclaim.

‘Trails/Traces’ collects together an album of solo tracks, recorded from 2001 onwards, sequenced into one long, somnabulant, and occasionally uneasy listen - one track, 'DDRhodes' (included here in its original unedited form), was originally released on the first jz-arkh 7”, and acquired something of a life of its own, appearing on Kompakt's Pop Ambient 2002 comp, soundtracking a dream sequence in a short experimental film by Moritz Grund (watch here), used in an advert for the Norwegian Postal Service(!), and then turning up as part of Neil Tennant's selection on the Pet Shop Boys Back To Mine compilation in 2005.

‘Trails/Traces’ was constructed entirely from pre-existing source material, short samples and sounds stretched and dissected to reveal previously unheard harmonic and melodic possibilities, the one exception to this being a reworked Liondialer live recording transmuted ('Ladybarn' on WHITEBOX003 becoming 'GDLadyburn') into a bold and dark shadow of its former self.

For your aural delight, here’s a teaser:
:

"When I was asked to do a podcast I thought 'Ooh that's nice' and made a cup of tea. But when I started to think of a playlist I realized that dragging mp3's from one file to another was rather boring. How could I make this a little more interesting? Well, seeing as a podcast is just a modern (read inferior) mixtape I thought I'd actually make a proper mixtape. So, after perusing my meagre vinyl collection I recorded a selection a tunes onto fantastic ferric, full of crusty goodness. It's a rather sombre collection but does end on an upbeat note with a rather worn out copy of one the best songs ever written. (Well, it's as upbeat as a song about doomed lovers on the moors can be anyway)."

Tracklist:

1. Vangelis - Soil Festivities Movement 4
2. Richard plays in Manchester band Oceansize, We say that

''Consolamentum' is not 'a score for a film not yet written', nor is it ambient 'drift' designed to soundtrack some nebulous void between waking and sleeping - current and lazy 'ambient music' tropes are inapplicable to this (and any) music so demanding of attention. 'Consolamentum' could be classed as some form of 'acoustic doom', perhaps some form of drone based music, but it is none of these things; it exists entirely in a realm of its own"

and we say this because we believe it to be the case. This is a fucking great record, and we think that listeners will concur with us. Reviews so far appear not to disagree:

'Consolamentum is a mature, cohesive and powerful work a world away from Ingram’s day job'

(says Mapsadaisical)

'Richard A. Ingram has created a fascinating piece of experimental work, which, despite its minimal settings, is rich in textures. He is here very much in control of his music and of the moods he manipulates, and convincingly assembles them to carry his narrative from one end of the record to the other'

(says The Milk Factory)

Listen to 'The Melioramentum':

WHITEBOX005 - Richard A Ingram 'The Melioramentum' by whitebox

Hear 'de Montfort' and 'Beziers' on WFMU's Mudd Up! with DJ/Rupture (April 19, 2010), and 'The Consolamentum' on BBC Radio Lancashire's legendary On The Wire show (April 17th, 2010).

You can buy 'Consolamentum' wherever you see fit, the album is also available to preorder at Amazon, where all our other releases are also available. on the 26th of October 2009, and are very pleased to have done so. Finally...after submitting the album to various 'name' labels as a potential release, and getting very positive responses, but no available release dates in any label's schedule until some time in a distant future, we thought 'fuck it, we'll do it ourselves', if only to give Danny the chance to seriously commit to its followup. So here it is.

Danny has been logging reviews on his own blog, so rather than paraphrase his own paraphrasis (some non-English language blog reviews have been enriched by Google's translational nuances, as always a ripe source for random track titles), go here and here.

Other people (who have since become friends, of both Danny and White Box) have said very nice things about the album, and rather than keep these comments to ourselves and feel smug, we've used them in a cynical way to assist sales through 'celebrity endorsement':

“I´ve been listening to it constantly since I got it, brilliant in every aspect...it's been a long time since I heard something this beautiful. It feels so complete as an album” (enthuses Dag Rosenqvist AKA Jasper TX)

“Really really beautiful … dark and moving” (says Rutger Zuyderfeld AKA Machinefabriek)

and

“Yesterday I was standing in the rain waiting for the bus, listening to that first song in my headphones, and I just lost it. My eyes completely filled with water, and my body just froze. Then later on in the evening I was on my way home on the bus, listening to the album again, and I missed my bus stop...it is deeply affecting music…I remember that day… It was intense and amazing” (says Peter Broderick AKA Peter Broderick)

Genuine and unsolicited comments, merciless exploited by us. on the 30th April 2009, and people have been quite complimentary so far about Greg Haines and Danny Saul's improvised antics - the Danny Saul Destroyer blog has links to reviews, including not a few fantastic Google-translated (and neologism-laden) accolades...all very pleasing, and a rich source for future track titles.

The album is a pretty-much continuous sequence of extracts from gigs recorded around Manchester, excerpts chosen by Gavin At Arkhonia (or gavin@arkhonia, or more correctly Gavin Brownrigg, when he isn't pretending to be 'weird' or 'obscure') from recordings made mainly for reference purposes - the original intention of the album was as a farewell present to Greg before he left for Berlin, and serves pretty much the same purpose as Captain Sid James' cake as presented to him by Lance Percival at the culmination of 'Carry On Cruising' (although Greg will undoubtedly be appalled at the low-culture analogy), containing bits of every place he visited as part of Liondialer while living in Manchester. The original sequence was put together very quickly, and then finetuned to suit all parties with an eye for release, and this tweaking took another 9 months of editing, re-editing, cleaning-up, mastering, remastering, being abandoned, being reconsidered...not a straightforward process in any way, and a source of intermittent grief for all parties. Amazing that it came out at all.

Album notes as follows:

Intro - this is an amalgam of parts from four different gigs, plus a spoken intro from Danny from the Ladybarn gig; the original intro had a rather different spoken exchange that was finally removed for all kinds of reasons, but mainly to not give air to the Green Room heckler who was so roundly dismissed with a 'fook off!' from the guitarist - it may yet appear as a bonus mp3 somewhere.

Saki - played to a cold and empty room, and its measured tone can be explained by Greg thinking the soundcheck was the actual gig and playing accordingly; once the actual performance began it had a pace that the soundcheck didn't.

Green Room 2 - a later section of the Green Room performance.

Bay Horse - recorded in the dark cellar room of a Manchester 'Northern Quarter' drinkery, the audience commentary throughout comes from a bunch of blokes playing pool feet away from the 'stage', utterly indifferent to the presence of 'performing' 'musicians'. Ivan Hall sat behind his amplifier adding subtle (and often inaudible) nuances via a ridiculous chain of effects pedals. No one noticed.

Green Room 1 - the opening of the piece above. The Green Room is a very pleasant 'arts' bar/venue/theatre. The audience were generally sympathetic.

Ladybarn - recorded in a small room upstairs in a nice old Burnage hostelry, and, booked as an acoustic duo, the entire performance drove very vocal drinkers away, in part because Greg grabbed one of their pint glasses from them, emptied its contents (their beer) onto the floor and then attacked his cello with this improvised bottleneck. The sublime harmonica was an older gentleman, very drunk, who joined in from behind his pint, and kept up his pure tone despite the barrage of noise that followed this excerpt. It's his 'if it's too loud, you're too old, so fook off' at the very end of the album (and which should have echoed the Intro's intended Rochdale dismissal), and at the time it just added an extra frisson of tension to a tense evening (the promoter was afterwards quite shocked at what she had booked), but listening back to his comments, his own enthusiasm is palpable. He claimed to have played with The Hollies in the sixties, but we had no luck in identifying him afterwards, and then the Ladybarn closed down, and no one checks their myspace any more, so he's still currently unidentified.

Music Box - a 'proper' venue on Oxford Road, and as support to Dead Meadow (and before a Spaceman 3 'tribute' band - that we should all live so long to see such things) - this was the end of the performance, and an errant mic inadvertantly left open by Danny distorted every movement onstage, until they both succumbed to it, and so their set ended with an empty stage spitting fizz and crackle from Danny's gear, and after Greg had stopped punching his laptop, leaving the soundman to fade it down, the audience were left to applaud their equipment's finale. A girl was overheard afterwards on the phone telling a friend she had just seen the worst band ever: "they didn't even have any songs!". Wish we had a recording of that.

Rarefish - recorded at a Belgium radio session, this is a two minute excerpt from twenty minutes, and an impromptu acoustic set, because none of their European power adapters worked, and they were both too hung over to find an alternative. Greg's playing is as delicate as his hand, after drunkenly punching a wall or something the night before.

The Afterword - and the aftermath of the Ladybarn. Goodwill and consternation, and substantial encouragement from that evening's special guest. "Proceed gentlemen."

Liondialer - live on recording and at Sound of Mu

Nice extensive review of both Liondialer live and 'Liondialer LIVE!' (copies available on tour, released 30th March) here:

Maybe this lacklustre performance was partly due to the less than comic venue at Sound of Mu on last night’s performance – a hopelessly large banana cardboard box occupying the center of the room and effectively splitting the already small venue into two smaller halves – with limited visibility, limited floor space for seating and generally a cramped atmosphere. Or maybe it was the result of two brilliant musicians not having had enough time to become accustomed to each others’ styles yet in a live setting – again, a theory which might need to be dispelled as quickly as its proposed due to the second feature of this review – namely the group’s tour edition album* Liondialer Live which features live recordings of their sets across various venues. Then again, that fact may be indicative of a variable performance in which brief moments of excellence shine through as memorable for album release and other more chaotic, improvised moments are deemed less suitable for preservation.

But

Rather than dwell on last evening’s concert, then, we focus on the evocative album based on Liondialer live in performance – a slimmed down release on White Box which sees Danny Saul and Greg Haines captured on “tape” in their moments of sheer brilliance – the Liondialer I was anticipating highly to see live in concert – the pairing of cello and electric/acoustic guitar and laptop processing for electronics and other instrumentation to back the two lead instruments. Saki is a haunting piece languishing in a receding light; Saul’s guitar is fleeting and wailing complemented by Haines’ strings twisted to siren-like sounds. The whole piece as such very moving and emotional. Then follows Green Room – a 2-part composition split up and in reverse on record by an intervening track, Bay Horse which is yet another lofty composition with sparsely interspersed guitar chords, scraping strings and ambulating electronic sounds in the background and the muffled voices of audience in the room caught on tape. Saul’s thought-provoking guitar chords are reminiscent of Ry Cooder, Christopher Willits and Mark Templeton to name a few – slow, lingering harmonies set in motion, and as always Haines’ strings twist and turn and feel like they’re wrung out with great physical exertion without sounding too strained. Highlights of the record comes with Green Room 1 which rounds off in little over 8 minutes and is a sluggish, wailing piece – Haines’ strings feel like the subsea sonar of whales. Halfway in, nervous strings scatter across the melody and long-stretched tones from Saul’s guitar complete the picture of something longing. But it’s the transition from this song, with chiming horns leading into the shorter Ladybarn that blows me away – the repetitive piano melody set to Saul’s reverberating, electric guitar tones. In conclusion Music Box is a noisy piece where guitar, strings and tinkering bells are broken down into bleeding masses of static and white noise which comes in bursts and dillutes most traces of melody, and Rarefish wraps up with some delicate acoustic guitar chords and fragile, scraped strings. For being a live recording it sounds very much like a studio album and has your ears pricked to attention – so it was disappointing to catch the duo on an “off-day” knowing their potential. But I’m likely to give Liondialer benefit of the doubt this time and anticipate their first studio recording.

*It's not a 'tour edition album', they're just flogging it on tour. Small point, small note.
Update : thanks for the correction Trym!
You can preorder it here or here

Liondialer : Mar 2 Logement, Antwerp, Belgium

Liondialer Drunk! European 2009 Tour Diary : Part 1

A Liondialer tour diary, mailed in by Danny, who welcomes interested readers with the following caution: "and here's another Swedish drinking establishment..."

Friday 13th Feb : Gothenburg

I arrived in Gothenburg to be greeted by Dag Rosenqvist aka Jasper TX, a good friend of Liondialer's and, in our semi-broken minds, a member of the group whenever circumstances allow. We dropped off my luggage and headed out to a nearby pub to catch up and give some space to his wife Anna, who was working from home that day. We picked up some more alcohol from a nearby supermarket then returned to Dag and Anna's, where I was well fed and plied with more booze. A good start. Later on we went out to a couple of bars and that's where things start to get a little hazy. The Mojito Anna bought for me was a total life saver – sorted me out a treat, despite the fact that she flatly refused to punch me in the face on my request. I guess she'd done her fair share of looking after me at this point, so I didn't feel too offended. Thanks Anna.

Saturday 14th Feb : Gerlesborg

Yesterday I had flown into Gothenberg with ease, arrived on time and in a good state of mind. Greg was not so lucky. His evening compared to mine was less than desirable; waking up on a ferry to discover he's the only person left on it, to then have to run after his coach, banging on the back of the bus to get it to stop, to be then kicked off the bus by a driver who insisted that it was the end of the line. Greg found himself wondering around unfamiliar streets with his cello and equipment at 4am, looking for someone to tell him where he was. "You're near central station" he was told. "What City?" asked Greg. "Copenhagen" was the reply.

A defiant Haines stormed onto the first coach he could find to Gothenberg (as in, not the coach company he had booked a ticket with), and demanded "You are taking me to Gothenberg now." There's something in a person's eyes at times like these which suggest only one thing: "Do not fuck with me. I am right and you are wrong". The driver, wisely, didn't give him any shit.

Jasper was our man in Gerlesborg. Now this place seemed so far off the radar that no one we had spoke to seemed to know where the hell it was. Our Swedish dates had all come from Christian Palinn, and seeing as he is without a doubt 'The Man' in Sweden, this wasn't so much a gamble as a worthy adventure with some guarantee of money and an audience who hadn't seen us before. Jasper picked us up and drove us to what turned out to be an art school/college somewhere way off the beaten track between Gothenburg and Oslo. Gerlesborg is, so far, the most beautiful place I've ever been to: totally detached from the outside world, a half frozen lake, clear blue skies, sun beaming down, snow everywhere, and absolute calm. The only sound to be heard was creaking ice and my tinnitus. Unbelievable. In the evening I watched the sun go down over twenty minutes and tried to store up as much of the spectacle as I could commit to memory.

This was the first Liondialer gig since last October at Die Remise, and we were playing with a jazz ensemble, their name of which escapes me at this time, but they were nice people. Musically their arrangements reminded me of more nu-jazz influenced acts, comparable at times to The Cinematic Orchestra. I thought they'd go down well at Matt and Phred's in Manchester.

The mistake we made tonight was to discuss our set before playing it. The golden rule in Liondialer is 'never ever EVER play the set in the soundcheck'. Tonight we discovered that the second rule might be 'never ever discuss anything about the set before the set'. Now I'm not saying we did a bad gig or anything, I think we played pretty well; but earlier that afternoon we had come up with a plan to begin the set with a few minutes of improvised piano which would then, at the 'signal', be recorded and processed, leading on to wherever we chose to take the piece from there. The result of this plan was a rather confusing onstage period of "was that the signal?" and "why's he not started doing the thing yet?" which in turn, probably set the tone for a rather subdued start to the tour. This was a low key gig musically, and we performed to an attentive, slightly older crowd than our usual draw – mainly a jazz crowd from what I could gather, and we seemed well received by them, despite them not really knowing what we were about. One girl after the gig told us she'd never heard music like that. "It's all improvised", said Greg. "But how do you both do that?" she asked. I'm not sure we could answer than one.

Sunday 15th Feb : Oslo

This really doesn't feel like a Sunday. I can already tell that days won't really matter over the next two weeks. Every night could be a Saturday night if I choose to make it so. Let's hope I can curb that urge for the sake of my body.

We had an early start to get to Oslo. It is a forty minute journey by car from Gerlesborg to the nearest bus stop. We barely made the coach, flagging it down from the wrong side of the road as we ran from the car. I have never seen such beautiful scenery as on the coach ride in; every time I look out of the left hand window of the bus, I know I'm missing something as equally staggering through the right side window. Maybe I was just lucky with the timing of all this, but the snowy weather seemed perfect for a journey that I could have happily stayed on for twice time it took. On to Oslo. We met up with Erik Skodvin, and went to his studio to eat and catch up. Erik had arranged tonight's gig at a bar called Sound Of Mu, and we were also playing with Mem-1. Together we spent a day wondering the streets and parks of Oslo with Erik as tour guide. I haven't seen as much snow as this since I was a little kid. I know, I know! I'm fucking impressed by snow, ok? Let me have my little joy trip.

We played tonight in a giant banana box, which was installed in the middle of the bar. It wasn't bad. This was a more typical Liondialer gig, with a little more 'if it ain't broke…' approach to the set. It all seemed pretty fast paced to me, and by the end we were satisfied we had done what we came to do. Mem-1 played before us, a really controlled set of cello/laptop processing. Then Erik hit the decks with a surprising selection of records which led me to realise he's something of a shoegazer at heart. We drank and moved on to another bar where a certain amount of animosity seemed to be building between our group of friends and some rather shifty looking, possible white-supremacists propping up the bar. It began with some English asshole speaking to Greg and me, trying to tell us that white people are made to feel like a minority in the UK. "That's fucking bollocks and I know it 'cause I live there" I replied. "I don't think we're interested in continuing this conversation" said Greg as we walked back into the bar. From this point things seemed a little standoffish. This black guy came in and ordered a drink and sat down. Minutes later a bartender took his drink, refunded him and told him to leave. Now his guy seemed alright to us, keeping himself to himself, so Jorgen (Fenetre Records), approached to intervene, and was told to mind his own business. Erik who knows some of the bar staff was told that this guy comes in and usually causes trouble, but given the circumstances it all felt deeply shady to me. Whatever was going on, the whiff of racism in the air did seem to sour the end of the evening. Like Greg and I said "You can take the Englishman out of England, but he's a cunt."

Monday 16th Feb : Oslo

We stayed at Jorgen's place that night, where we drank a horrific amount of vodka, resulting in a day off in Oslo that took us no further than Jorgen's couch. We watched Flight Of The Conchords live in New York. Total genius. By the end of the day we knew that in a matter of hours, we'd feel refreshed for the Gothenberg show tomorrow.

Tuesday 17th Feb : Gothenberg

We met Christian and went to hook up with Dag at the library where we were playing this evening. It was a nice auditorium with a great sound system and capacity of 140 people. Greg had a cool idea (avoiding Liondialer's golden rule and the other golden rule), of setting up a microphone in the middle of the crowd and recording part of the set/the crowd sound as we played and using it as source material to develop as we go. After sound check we found ourselves a few doors down in a typical Swedish drinking establishment, catching up with Dag and generally having a riotous laugh. After one drink we headed back to the auditorium to discover that the place was full and they were waiting for us to play. I had gotten confused over what time we were starting.

We played two pieces, the first Greg and I doing our thing, then the second with Dag on board. Whatever we played, the set went down a storm and we were really satisfied that we'd hit it. It was great to have Dag with us – he's a musician who really gets the kind of necessity for restraint and observation of the sound that makes Liondialer, in my mind, work so well. He is the man, and I know that he has at one point in his life done a wonderful thing (he found my hair gel under his shoes – something of a life-saver for a vain art ponce such as myself)

Afterwards we ate at a Polish restaurant with Christian and some of his friends who attended the gig. Amazing food, followed by more drinking into the night, before an early start the next morning to get to Stockholm. 'Sleep-dep' surely feeds into the process of making this music.

Wed 18th Feb : Stockholm

The promoter Gavin looked after us and was a great guy; he kinda reminded me a little of Matt Long, a promoter I know in Manchester, who always wants to do the best he can to make the audience and the performers happy – something which can at times be a thankless task, so I hope he knew we appreciated his efforts on all fronts.

We played with Library Tapes tonight, but not before we played Library Tapes at table tennis. It was a fair fight. It was nice to meet David, who was a low-key type and a real nice fella. Now Greg and I hadn't had much sleep. It had been a long day up until the point of playing, and after starting on the beer a little earlier than normal, we felt primed to play a set that was 'for us'. Not in a selfish or exclusive way, but more in a way of 'let's have some fun'. We started behind closed curtains with a rather rapturous noise assault, hidden from sight pumping fists in the air at each other in a Whitehouse-style, nipple tweaking moment, grins from ear to ear. We had arrived in Stockholm.

This was a good set. I haven't had as much fun playing in quite a while. What happened happened, and we went with it. As did the audience...I hope. Not sure it was what they were expecting, but they fucking got it. We drank more booze, finally got the gin we had previously requested, and then onto wine. By the end of the night, we had pretty much covered our travel costs for the rest of the tour, and were ready to head to Berlin for a few nights, a solo show each, a DJ set, Greg's birthday and a Berlin Liondialer gig. It was on us, and us alone, to not screw up. We cannot fail. Onward...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://whiteboxrecordings.blogspot.com/2009/02/liondialer-drunk-european-tour-2009.html' title='Liondialer Drunk! on the 9th of February 2009 - nice review here (especially considering the style-centric nature of its source):

"SSOWB creator, songwriter, and singer Gareth Smith is apparently a bit of a temperamental character, which may go someway to explaining why the Manchester-based band currently find themselves on about their tenth different line-up. He would do well to keep together the recruits that have put together this very impressive first LP however, particularly considering the tracks were supposedly only laid down following a handful of brief rehearsals. Einstein's Getaway harnesses a seminally post-punk/no wave ethos, whilst careening from funk driven alt-rock to cowbell bashing disco-not-disco, and even downbeat avant-rock along the way - all the while presided over by the unmistakably dysfunctional delivery of SSOWB's key protagonist. Opener and title track Einstein's Getaway bops along to a loose funk groove before Smith s ramshackle yelps charge in, bringing to mind no wave luminary James White of The Contortions...but with more contortion. Elsewhere, Engine is post-punk gold-dust; a pimped up juggernaut with customised glam keys and chunky bass, whilst the wild vocals on Crawl , a Birthday Party meets hyped-up Modest Mouse brute of a track, seem to literally fall and stumble out the speakers. After a brief respite by way of the disarming Mog's Pill and Hardy's Farm, the album closes with P.A.Y . Visceral in a weirdo standing in the street and screaming at a lamp-post kind of way , it brings the album howling and crashing to an entirely unceremonious halt. Brilliant." (Jim Finucane)

Purchase it at Amazon should you so wish - gift-wrap is The WB’s pummelled their way through a selection of tracks from the ‘Einstein’s Getaway’ CD, oblivious to the rather uncharacteristic ‘ghost town’ vibes we were getting from Brick Lane on a freezing Wednesday evening. Those in attendance were clearly enthralled that the band and the Rough Trade staff had gone ahead with the event, regardless of any amount of limp-wristed windy ice-bating thrown in our path. We’d like to thank all those who came out for the gig, and the Rough Trade staff for their hospitality, all of which went to making the trip nothing short of a joyous riot sandwiched between two prolonged stints inside a rattling, icy metal (white) box hurtling down the motorway at alarming speeds.

More on the SSOWB Rough Trade instore

"We are very excited about this band. they are fresh as fuck, yet classic as a fish finger sandwich. They've got this one sided 12" called 'Engine' which is quite brilliant. It's the culmination of years of listening to allsorts of things Factory related but ends up sounding like New Fast Automatic Daffodils on crystal meth. The cowbell embellished frantic off-beat drums starts things off nicely before this this hoofing Lancastrian bellow hots things up, stepping onto this relentless & propulsive level with a swirling, eerie keyboard stolen off a record by The Wake and a pinching manic bass line that'd kick your cock off it's so low slung. So it's a total floor filler, stuffed with energy & authentic punk funk attitude but sounds remarkably fresh rather than just a pastiche. watch out for these chaps I'd say.....Like the white ink stamped die cut, it's well designer"

says Norman Records

Other shops and onlines have copies left (here, here
